Generative AI Policy

NOTION supports the responsible and ethical use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) and AI-assisted technologies to enhance scholarly communication while maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity.

1. Permitted Use

Authors may use Generative AI or AI-assisted technologies solely to improve the language, readability, grammar, clarity, and overall presentation of their manuscripts. These technologies may assist the writing process but must not replace the authors' intellectual contribution, scientific judgment, or critical analysis. The use of AI for research-related tasks such as data processing, statistical analysis, coding, or literature exploration is acceptable when it forms part of the research methodology. Such use should be described transparently and in sufficient detail within the Methods section to ensure reproducibility.

2. Human Responsibility

All AI-generated or AI-assisted content must be carefully reviewed, verified, and revised by the authors before submission. Authors are fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and scientific validity of the manuscript. Since AI systems may produce inaccurate, incomplete, misleading, or biased information, they must never be relied upon as authoritative sources without independent verification.

3. Authorship

Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies cannot be listed as authors or co-authors of any manuscript submitted to NOTION. Authorship requires intellectual responsibility, accountability, and the ability to approve the final manuscript and respond to editorial and ethical inquiries—responsibilities that can only be fulfilled by human authors.

4. Disclosure Requirement

Authors who use Generative AI or AI-assisted technologies during the preparation of a manuscript must disclose such use upon initial submission. Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies in the Writing Process should be placed immediately before the References section.

The declaration should follow the format below:

During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [Name of AI Tool or Service] for [specific purpose, e.g., improving language quality, enhancing readability, or editing grammar]. Following the use of this tool, the author(s) critically reviewed, verified, and revised the manuscript as necessary and assume full responsibility for the accuracy, integrity, and originality of the published work.

No declaration is required for conventional writing-support tools used exclusively for reference management.

5. Figures, Images, and Graphical Content

NOTION does not permit the use of Generative AI or AI-assisted technologies to create, modify, or manipulate figures, images, photographs, graphical abstracts, or other visual materials submitted as part of a manuscript. The only exception is when AI-based image generation or processing constitutes an integral component of the research methodology. In such cases, authors must provide a complete and reproducible description in the Methods section, including the name of the model or software, version number, developer or manufacturer, relevant parameters, and sufficient methodological details.

6. Editorial Assessment

The editorial team reserves the right to request additional information regarding the use of AI-assisted technologies at any stage of the peer-review or publication process. Failure to disclose relevant AI use or misuse of AI technologies may constitute a breach of publication ethics and may result in manuscript rejection, withdrawal, or retraction in accordance with NOTION's publication ethics policies.
