Focus and Scope
COMMICAST (Communication, Media, Culture, and Society) is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary academic journal published by Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD). The journal provides a scholarly platform for critical and innovative studies that explore communication phenomena in contemporary society, particularly in the context of digital transformation, media convergence, and socio-cultural change.
COMMICAST welcomes original research articles, conceptual papers, and critical reviews that contribute to the advancement of knowledge in communication, media, language, literature, culture, and related social sciences. All submitted manuscripts undergo an initial editorial screening followed by a rigorous double-blind peer review process.
The focus and scope of COMMICAST are organized into five core areas:
1. Media, Digital Communication, and Technology
This area covers studies on traditional and new media, digital platforms, social media, information and communication technology (ICT), audience analysis, media convergence, artificial intelligence in communication, and the impact of technological innovation on communication practices and society.
2. Communication, Politics, and Public Sphere
This focus includes political communication, public opinion, media and democracy, communication policy, national resilience, propaganda, war and conflict communication, hegemony, power relations, and the role of media in governance and civic engagement.
3. Culture, Identity, and Social Interaction
This area explores culture and social interaction, media and identity, gender and sexuality in media, religion and media, subcultures, youth and globalization, tourism and cultural studies, as well as the negotiation of meaning in local and global contexts.
4. Language, Literature, and Semiotic Studies
This scope encompasses linguistics (sociolinguistics, pragmatics, applied and comparative linguistics), semiotics, discourse analysis, and literary studies, including Indonesian and comparative literature, with an emphasis on communication, representation, and meaning-making.
5. Strategic Communication, Media Practice, and Social Development
This area focuses on advertising, public relations, journalism, broadcasting, health communication, media literacy, media education, development communication, and communication practices that contribute to social change and sustainable development.
These topics are addressed in full-length academic articles, critical statements on current issues, developmental practice, and reviews of books based literature and culture. The journal presents an innovative platform for researchers, students, practitioners and educators to both learn from and contribute to the field. All articles are subject to initial Editor screening and then a rigorous double-blind peer-review process before publication.
