The scholars argued that there are several differences in the total and khabar on asbāb al-nuzūl of Sūrah al A‘rāf verse 189. These differences definitely lead to a number of controversies regarding the understanding of the verse. This paper verifies this problem by comparing the opinions of muhadditsīn and mufassirīn scholars, so that it is clear which argument is more appropriate to apply to the verse. The researcher concludes that the majority of scholars do not include khabar of Asbāb al-nuzūl of Sūrah al A'rāf verse 189 for two reasons. First, asbāb al-nuzūl contains Isrā’iliyyāt. Second, the substance of asbāb al-nuzūl is not in accordance with the value of 'Aqeedah Iman to Rasul because it states that Prophet Adam had committed shirk by following the whispers of the devil and naming his son with the name of the devil so that he would live.
