Background: Indonesia is located at the convergence of the Eurasian, Pacific, and Indo-Australian tectonic plates, making it highly vulnerable to natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tsunamis. Turgo Hamlet, Purwobinangun Village, is one of the areas at high risk of the potential eruption of Mount Merapi. Disaster preparedness among heads of households plays a crucial role in mitigating the impacts of disasters. Preparedness is influenced by several factors, including knowledge and attitudes. This study aimed to examine the relationship between knowledge and attitudes and the level of disaster preparedness among heads of households in facing the potential eruption of Mount Merapi in Turgo Hamlet, Purwobinangun Village. Methods: This quantitative study employed a cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of 311 heads of households in Turgo Hamlet, Purwobinangun Village. A total of 93 respondents were selected using proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using Spearman's rank correlation test. Results: The findings showed that knowledge was positively and significantly associated with disaster preparedness, as indicated by a Spearman's correlation coefficient of 0.622 and a p-value of < 0.001. Attitudes were also positively and significantly associated with disaster preparedness, as indicated by a Spearman's correlation coefficient of 0.760 and a p-value of < 0.001. Conclusion: This study indicates a significant relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and disaster preparedness among heads of households in Turgo Hamlet, Purwobinangun Village. Higher levels of knowledge and more positive attitudes were associated with better preparedness for the potential eruption of Mount Merapi.
