Evaluation of Cleanliness, Health, Safety, and Environmental Sustainability in Baturraden

Abstract

Background: Effective implementation of cleanliness, health, safety, and environmental sustainability is essential at tourism destinations, yet certification does not necessarily ensure consistent day-to-day practice. This study evaluated implementation at Lokawisata Baturraden against SNI 9042:2021. Method: A qualitative descriptive evaluation was conducted from January to April 2026. Six purposively selected informants represented destination coordination, cleanliness, health, safety, environmental management, and visitors. Data from semi-structured interviews, structured observation, and documentation were coded against standard indicators and triangulated across sources and methods. Results: Routine cleaning, covered bins, a health post, emergency procedures, evacuation information, hazard-warning signs, and periodic waste collection were in place. However, monitoring logs were not standardized; cleanliness and health-promotion media were sparse; handwashing and sex-separated toilet provision was limited; first-aid resources were concentrated in one location; fire-protection equipment and emergency training were incomplete; and waste bins did not support source segregation. Implementation was therefore only partially aligned with the standard, with recurrent gaps in monitoring, resource distribution, staff competency, and visitor communication. Conclusion: Certification should be followed by risk-based facility placement, documented inspection and corrective-action cycles, recurrent emergency training, source-separated waste systems, and behaviorally designed visitor messages.
